HOW CAN A STRETCH15 SESSION HELP YOU?

When you experience chronic pain on a daily to weekly basis, it can begin to take the enjoyment out of life. Pain can become an obstacle in life as it makes getting through everyday routine activities like sitting or sleeping, and physical activity such as, exercise, difficult.

WHAT CAUSES CHRONIC PAIN?

  • Staying in certain postures for extended periods of time (i.e. sitting hunched over in front of a computer for long hours)

  • Engaging in repetitive movement patterns on a daily basis (i.e. carrying a heavy handbag on the same shoulder or a construction worker hammering with the same arm overhead repeatedly)

  • Previous accidents or injuries (i.e. car accident, fall, or breaking a bone)

 

Your body is smart and learns to work around the postures, patterns, or injuries overtime if not addressed. Eventually, this leads to muscle imbalances and compensations where certain muscles may become overactive and tight while others become underactive and weak. The overactive muscles will cause the pain you feel on a daily basis even during normal everyday activities like sitting or sleeping.

HOW CAN YOU ALLEVIATE PAIN & MAINTAIN LONG-TERM RELIEF?

To alleviate the pain, you might try various therapies such as massage, chiropractic adjustments, or physical therapy. However, in certain cases, relief is not found and one may seek out more invasive procedures such as, cortisone shots or surgery. While these therapies provide relief the majority of the time, in some cases, unless the habitual postures or repetitive movement patterns are not altered, the pain will typically return and persist.  

This is where corrective exercise bridges the gap. While hands-on therapy, in particular, chiropractic adjustments, help re-align the body, corrective exercise helps support and maintain that alignment for an extended period of time. After you leave a chiropractic adjustment, exercise techniques such as, foam rolling and stretching, have proven to be beneficial in maintenance of proper alignment and restoration of optimal movement patterns.   

 

With the correct knowledge, guidance, and routine made to target the specific muscles causing you pain, these techniques can combat the negative effects of habitual postures and movement patterns so you can sustain alignment. Thus, the two go hand-in-hand and when done in conjunction with one another, can provide you lifelong relief, better movement, and a more enjoyable life.

HOW DOES CORRECTIVE EXERCISE WORK?

Once a joint has lost normal function, due to either chronic sedentary positioning or repetitive stress injury, the muscles around that joint may spasm and tighten to minimize the stress around the area. Certain muscles then become overactive/shortened to prevent movement and further injury.

 

Corrective exercise uses key techniques to restore and maintain proper alignment, including:

  • Myofascial rolling (also known as foam rolling​) to inhibit any tight, overactive muscles causing pain

  • Static stretching to lengthen any overactive, shortened muscles so you can achieve better range of motion

  • Muscle activation techniques to wake up and strengthen any weakened, sleepy muscles (this is key to keeping pain away!)

  • Movement integration techniques reeducate and coordinate the muscles of the body to move as one unit.

For years, I suffered from chronic muscle pain in my low back and shoulder due to a combination of car accidents, poor posture, lack of proper movement, and lack of mobility. I tried everything to alleviate the pain - from physical therapy, pain killers, rest, massage, and more - but nothing provided lasting relief. Finally, I was introduced to corrective exercise, and this changed my life. It completely changed how I viewed exercise and movement, and I became so passionate about it that I knew I wanted to learn more so I could help others with their pain. I finally learned what was causing my muscle pain & dysfunction, and how to move my body in a way that felt good, and maintain that long-term! I took myself from painful movement to finally feeling confident in my body. Now, I can do activities I love, sleep, and move without pain! As a corrective exercise specialist, I teach people how to do the same.
